The White House has firmly rejected a report suggesting that President Donald Trump is contemplating commuting the prison sentence of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. A spokesperson described the claim as having “zero truth,” emphasizing that such decisions are solely within the president’s authority.
The controversy began when TMZ reported that a “high-ranking White House official” indicated Trump might reduce Combs’ 50-month sentence for prostitution-related charges “as early as this week.” The report also mentioned that Combs’ legal team had informally sought clemency. However, the White House swiftly countered, stating, “There is zero truth to the TMZ report, which we would’ve gladly explained had they reached out before running their fake news.” The spokesperson reiterated that only the president, not anonymous sources, can make decisions on pardons and commutations.
Despite the White House’s denial, TMZ stood by its reporting, asserting that the story was accurate. The outlet updated its coverage to reflect the White House’s response but maintained confidence in its original claims.
Combs, 55, was sentenced on October 3, 2025, after being convicted of transporting individuals for prostitution under the Mann Act. He was acquitted of more severe charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. His legal team has filed an official notice of appeal and is pursuing a clemency request.
President Trump has previously acknowledged a past friendly relationship with Combs but expressed difficulty in considering clemency due to Combs’ past political criticisms. In August, Trump stated that while he was once friendly with Combs, the rapper’s “terrible statements” during Trump’s presidential campaign made a pardon “more difficult.”
This latest development has added fuel to ongoing debates about executive clemency and the influence of celebrity on legal proceedings. As the situation unfolds, both the White House and Combs’ legal team are expected to provide further statements.
